Leaders test for struggling Alvechurch

8:00am Wednesday 15th February 2012

ALVECHURCH are gearing up for another tough game as they seek to escape the relegation zone in the Midland Alliance on Saturday, when they visit leaders Coventry Sphinx (3pm kick-off).

While, the Churchmen are second-from-bottom in the table and haven’t played for a fortnight because of the recent cold snap, joint managers Vaughan Pearhouse and Graham Scott are hoping recent promising performances signal a resurgence for their young troops.

Alvechurch’s last league outing saw them grab a 1-1 draw at Westfields, which will have given them a boost in confidence.

However, Sphinx are in formidable form, winning the last six games and unbeaten in 13 at the top-of-the-table.

Alvechurch, who have had clashes against Gresley and Willenhall abandoned in recent weeks because of snow and sub-zero temperatures, were set to play Kirby Muxloe last night.

Alvechurch have been boosted by the arrival of on-loan Solihull Moors duo Kevin Borrey and David Kalonji, both of whom are from Belgium.

New striker Joe Wright has also signed from Stratford and was set to make his debut against Kirby last night Sam Wills is still serving his suspension for Saturday but as long as the Muxloe game went ahead, Rob Freeman should be available after completing his ban.

Pearshouse said: "Joe is a over six foot tall and looks like he could be a good addition.”

They are still waiting to see who they will meet in the Worcestershire Senior Urn Final after Studley’s clash at Bewdley was postponed last Tuesday.

Studley’s semi-final game has been rearranged for next Tuesday at Ribbesford Meadow (7.45pm kick-off).

Bees boss Lee Adams is hopeful his team will have all players available for Saturday’s league home clash against Dunkirk (3pm kick-off), after their game against Ellesmere Rangers at the weekend was postponed.

The enforced break has given injured players, such as Lei Brown, more time to recover.
