"Pretty Awful" campaign launches in Redditch

RESIDENTS may have seen some ‘Pretty Awful’ images on waste collection vehicles in Redditch recently as part of a campaign to reduce fly tipping.

Launched by Redditch Council last month, the Pretty...Awful campaign encourages residents to play their part to keep the borough looking at its best.

Last year fly tipping cost the council and tax payers £41,000. It is usually committed by someone who is not registered to take away waste from businesses or households.

Councillor Brandon Clayton, whose portfolio covers local environment, said “Fly tipping is illegal, unattractive and spoils our estates and our countryside.

“We all have a responsibility to make sure we only use people who are legally registered to deal with waste to take it away for us. If your rubbish is found in a fly tip you can be held responsible for the fine.

“We have some wonderful green spaces to be proud of in Redditch that are often ruined by fly tipping. The campaign will act as a reminder, to both residents and businesses, to keep Redditch clean and green.”

All businesses are legally responsible for the waste they produce and its subsequent disposal. Redditch Borough Council officers will be carrying out random spot checks on businesses to ensure they have their waste contract agreement in place so they don’t become liable to a £300 fine.

Redditch residents can use the Crossgates household waste sites to get rid excess waste, purchase orange sacks and leave them alongside the bin on collection day or book a bulky waste collection by calling 01527 534123.

To ensure the waste service they are using is legally registered, people can verify with the Environment Agency on 0370 8506 506.
