Schools improve on GCSE results
2:00pm Friday 27th January 2012
SCHOOLS in Redditch are among many throughout the county to have received improved GCSE results, according to recent figures.
The percentage of county pupils achieving five or more GCSE A* to C grades in both English and maths, the government’s benchmark, is higher than last year.
The highest achieving school in Redditch was St Augustine's High School which had 67 per cent of its pupils achieving five or more GCSEs A* to C grades in English and maths.
Trinity High School and Sixth Form had 60 per cent, the same as Woodrush High School.
49 per cent of pupils at Arrow Vale High School and Kingsley College managed to achieve the government’s benchmark, the same per cent as students at NEW College.
Overall, across the county’s schools just more than 60 per cent of pupils reached the benchmark in 2011, up on last year’s figure which was 54.9 per cent.
The figures put Worcestershire above the national figure for the same benchmark, which is 58.9 per cent.
Jane Potter, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for education and skills, said: "The result of 60.1 per cent (for the number achieving the benchmark) is extremely encouraging.
“It is a credit to the hard work of all the students and those who have supported them that another year of steady improvement has been achieved in schools throughout Worcestershire."
